In this Conceptual Design Review (CoDR) report, we present the secondary design stages for a Heavy-Lift Aircraft (HLA), developed as part of the AIAA Undergraduate Team Aircraft Design competition. This aircraft is designed to replace aging military transport models like the C-17 and C-5M, providing strategic support to the United States Air Force with capabilities to transport up to three M-1 Abrams tanks or heavy payloads across extensive ranges.
Our team explored multiple concepts, ultimately selecting a high-wing, T-tail configuration with four podded engines, allowing for efficient load distribution and minimized drag. Key features include modular fuselage design, advanced avionics, and structural composites for enhanced durability. The design prioritizes affordability, operational flexibility, and adherence to mission-specific requirements, including range, payload, and maintenance considerations. Through detailed aerodynamic and structural analysis, this report outlines how the HLA meets USAF requirements, delivering a robust solution for rapid deployment and global mobility.
